A Fighting Spirit Won’t Save Your Life

A Fighting Spirit Won’t Save Your Life - NYTimes.com

We are a nation of optimists who ascribe to the idea that we control our individual destiny. This is a powerful concept that has a lot to show for it. Frankly, maybe life is not possible without that belief.

Strongly associated with this belief in a better future for ourselves is the idea that when things are not going the way we want them to go we must be the reason for the failure to succeed. From there it is but a small step to say that the unemployed are responsible for the state they are in, that the sick must have done something to make their bodies fail, that life is good the way it is. And since I am doing fine, there must be something wrong with you.

If you only believed what I belief.
