This editorial opinion in today's New York Times lays out what the next election is going to be about. Republicans propose to dismantle the social contract and Democrats are playing defense. It is a battle where Democrats look like conservatives and Republicans dress up as progressives. Besides the irony of it all, this is not what either party wants. The outcome is clear, Democrats will win to govern four more years, but the damage will have been done if Democrats simply play defense. They need to describe a future where all are equal for the law, where opportunities are open to all who want to pursue them, where people believe they have a fair chance to be a winner.
