Raising our debt ceiling

There is something seriously wrong about our union. Most of us actually see the abyss ahead of us. Is there a lesson to be learned from driving off a cliff? Do you stop someone from throwing a bomb? Should the insane rule the asylum? Or, if we are already in the asylum, who are these people watching us?

Those were the first sentences that came up after reading Nicholas Kristof's opinion in this morning's New York Times. We, America, are roughly a week away from defaulting on our financial obligations. Those who say that like every individual, the government needs to live within its means, those people are willing to defend their position to the point that it will become more costly for us to live within our means. That must be pretty close to Einstein's definition of insanity.

Let me rephrase the question. What do you do with people who are not just trying to commit suicide, but who are about to harm the bystanders as well? Would you have stopped Jonestown if you saw that one coming? Is this ultimately why we have the right to bear arms? We stood up against the red coats because of taxation without representation. Is it acceptable to you that some unhinged representatives are about to make life worse for the rest of us, not because they ask us to sacrifice for a common good, but because they are out of their minds?

Wait, is that the sound of a horse coming my way? That couldn't be Paul Revere, could it?
