The pendulum

We are living in a time when a large segment of Americans, maybe even the majority, when looking at this cartoon from Tom Toles (© The Washington Post), is of the opinion that Supreme Court justices interpret the constitution based on their political philosophy. And, of course, they and all judges do and have always done so. What is new is that this is becoming an issue as it threatens the status quo during a time when we collectively get very little accomplished.

It becomes an issue when a vocal majority of us has given up on making America work for all Americans. Polarization sells newspapers and attracts eyeballs. When the old is no longer relevant, when change is not just in the air, but is affecting all of our lives. When we  are preoccupied figuring out how to make a living, how to stay alive, during the ongoing digital revolution. When not enough of us are making it into the middle class, the group that is of the opinion that they are doing OK. Well enough to be considerate to others not like them. To think that sometimes things go your way and some time they go mine.
