I am a liberal

In today's New York Times Maureen Dowd quotes these well crafted lines from Robert Frost.

I’m liberal. You, you aristocrat,

Won’t know exactly what I mean by that.

I mean so altruistically moral

I never take my own side in a quarrel.

In this poem Frost defines a liberal as an altruist, someone who takes positions against his own interest. Along the lines of people who vote for a tax increase. Ms. Dowd quoted Frost to make the point that Obama continues to make deals that rewards Republicans more than Democrats, while these same Republicans can't hide their distaste for him. Still, he tries again and again as if he cannot accept that there are people who don't like him, no, who actually despise him. Might it be that Republicans are better than Democrats at playing politics? Or could it be that Republicans despise the president because how can one appreciate an opponent who makes it so easy for them to win?

It doesn't look like Obama has been very happy doing his job lately. It would have been better had he acknowledged defeat at the hands of those country-loving Republicans and followed that up by saying that "this defeat comes at a great loss for our country, but that does not mean that we should give up hope. This loss will make me work harder to win one for the country the next time around. Until then, those of you who have jobs, hang on to them and those of you who don't, here's to hoping that the job creators do what they do best. Make money. And now, I'm off to Martha's Vineyard. See you in September. God bless you and God bless the United States of America."

In the meantime this blogger will try to figure out how to make honest brokers out of people who are our enemies not our adversaries.

Meeting of the minds

Today the president of America became the president of America for the Republican Party. Should we just say, 'well, better late than never', or:

Is that the same Republican Party that claims to be the flag bearer of Us Americans?

Let it be said, you are the minority and you LIE!

Ok, that's all  I am going to say about it.

Then he stepped up to the podium and said:

Fellow Americans, we wasted a lot of time (psst, while you were not watching the majority of us passed Health Care reform) - (applause) - Fellow Citizens, we all know now that we have more problems to solve. This is what we'll do. We'll change immigration laws, we agree about how to divide the spoils of government --- who will get subsidies, what it takes to be our friend and what to be our enemy, what our long range goal is. We'll start with the goal.

We believe that people should be free to choose democracy as one of the ways to be governed.
We believe that people have the right to a fair trial, et cetera, et cetera,

Come together. It's time to act. It's late.
