When Elena and I walked a trail behind our house a few weeks ago, we ran into bulldozers and backhoes that had succeeded to efficiently tear a parcel of forest apart. We did not get it. The forest in question had been fenced off for years and only recently the fence had been removed and a notice was posted that gave us the impression that the new trees, planted among the many large old growth trees, were now strong enough not be be damaged by foraging deer. After all that, we now were face-to-face with large tree trunks that seemed to on their way to wood and paper mills. Although we are not necessarily against this type of forest management, we wondered whether our memory was wrong or that the university, as the main caretaker of the forests in these Pennsylvanian woods, had changed its mind and decided to make a quick buck. I looked around on the web to see if there was any information about the management of the forest in question. I could not find it and decided to inquire and make a recommendation to stonevalley@psu.edu.
